An event for "International Mountain Day" was organized by our faculty member.

On 11.12.2023, hosted by Istanbul University Faculty of Literature Department of Geography and supported by the Turkish Geographical Society and the International Geographical Union, the 'International Mountain Day' event organized by Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Gölhisar Vocational School of Architecture and Urban Planning Lecturer Dr. Neslihan Dal was held. The event was held live and online with the participation of expert scientists in the field within the scope of International Mountain Day on December 11. The program started with the opening speech of the President of the Turkish Geographical Society, Prof. Dr. Barbaros Gönençgil, and continued with the speech of the President of IGU (International Geographical Union)-CMS (Commission on Mountain Studies) Prof. Dr. Fausto Sarmiento. Then, it continued with the speeches of Gölhisar Vocational School Lecturer Dr. IGU–CMS EC member, Dr. Neslihan Dal, IGU Deputy Secretary General and CMS, EC member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pankaj Kumar, and Istanbul University Department of Geography Lecturer Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cihan Bayrakdar, and ended with the presentation of IGU Biogeography and Biodiversity Commission President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suraj Mal. The importance of International Mountain Day on December 11 is not only that mountains are the most important and widespread landforms on earth, but also that they are among the areas most affected by global climate change today. The United Nations General Assembly has designated December 11 as "International Mountain Day." Since 2003, it has been celebrated at a scientific level by many organizations and institutions in different geographies and different hosts around the world to raise awareness about the importance of mountains for life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain people and their environments around the world.
